Hereford Young open exhibition.

I took part in Hereford young open exhibition back in September. I talked to a lot of people and got some great ideas for the future. There was some really great stuff on show.

'Bog oak dissection'

'Pine towers' and 'Bog Oak Wing'

'Bog Wood Time Line' and 'Rosewood Horizon'

Untitled

'Charred Chestnut Twist'

I think that overall my space worked very well. It showed the range of my work but all the pieces worked well together.

I ended up winning the Hereford Cathedral sculpture award and . . . . . . .

Hereford Young Open Award. I could not have asked for any more.

Me enjoying the news that I had just won my awards.

The In-site festival Birmingham

Here are some photos of what i got up to at the in-site festival in Birmingham. I had a lot of fun showing the live audience what I get up to and what my work is all about. Making a mess was fun too!

Roughing out one of the pieces with the arbortech. The workmate is the perfect tool to hold the wood steady without damaging the surface.

The second stage in the process, burning the grooves cut into the pieces. A small blow torch was enough to get the job done and was safe for me and the audience.

The mess and all my tools for everyone to see.

There is also a video of what i got up to on youtube. If you search my name it will pop up, sorry about the sound quality.

Where im at at the moment.

I'm hoping to get in the workshop next week to get some products made for up coming Christmas craft fairs.

I've picked up all my artwork from Hereford and re-installed some sculptures in Hay on Wye, Brook street pottery gallery, until the new year.

I have been developing new ideas for the next projects and have an exciting idea for a range of new wall pieces that I'm looking forward to creating.

I will post some images of what I've been up to in the near future.

Hereford Cathedral Sculptures

This is a photo of the two blackthorn sculptures I have at Hereford Cathedral. (two Blackthorn spires) They work really well in the area and its great how the light interacts with them throughout the day creating great shadows.
People view them as they walk through the garden which means they seem to move and twist as you walk past. If you are in Hereford drop in and have a look.

A short update

Hi, sorry i have not posted anything for so long, I'm still in the process of getting my workshop sorted out. I have found a potential space on a farm a stones throw away from where I live and am now acquiring the tools to fill it.

I have just brought myself a 14 inch wadkin bandsaw and a pillar drill so it wont be too long until I will be posting about new pieces I have been making.

Its been too long out of the workshop and I cant wait to get making and explore a few of my new ideas.

New Designers

New Designers was a brilliant experience. Its a great opportunity to see what other artists and makers are doing, I will definitely be going next year to see whats happening even if i don't exhibit.

Here's what my pieces looked like once it was all set up and in the right position. I had to build the wall and weight it down with big bottles of water before I even put my stuff up. That was something I wasn't expecting to do.

I had to strongly light the top piece to cast some shadow to emphesise the precise cuts.
The cherry wave sold! Thanks Gary.

As you can see it was quite busy at times.

This is the other section of the Hereford College of Arts stand. There are some fantastic pieces of work by my fellow students.

New designers is a MASSIVE place.

Setting up the degree show!

I spent most of last week setting up the end of year degree show. It was pretty stressful but we got there in the end.

Here's my space first thing in the morning once I brought my pieces in. I had four boards to fill so I got cracking.

The first piece to go up was the largest cherry wall hanging. I am so happy with how it looks now its on the wall, the shadows it casts are beautiful and they help fill the wall so it doesn't look sparse.

Once that piece was up it was used to govern where the others went. It gave me the right level for the bog oak piece and allowed me to see where the freestanding pieces could be placed.

Here's the other wall with the bog oak and cherry cross section wall hangings. I was worried that this wall would be too busy compared to the other but the carvings split the space and balance the whole corner.

I staggered the free standing blackthorn sculptures with the hanging piece to echo the forest and the idea of growth.

I just need to paint the bases and sub the wire for fishing line on the hanging piece.

The cherry cross section wall hanging on the wall, it just fits.

The bog oak piece up on the wall, it also casts amazing linear shadows that highlight the precise cuts.
