I am currently working on group of hangings for my colleges degree show. They are lengths of blackthorn carved down into a fluid shape using the arbortech, draw knife and sanding pad. I then work cracks and openings into the surface with chissels and burn them with a gas torch. I am currently half way through completing them, there will be another post to come that will show the final stages of production and what the pieces actually look like.
The form is supposed to be a man made interpretation of a natural object, something that could be mistaken as a natural occurrence. The channels echo the flow of nature, growth and energy.
This is me roughing out the shape using the arbortech. It makes a heck of mess but makes for a good action shot.
Once the channels were chiseled and arborteched i burnt with the gas torch...
There is obviously some spillage of charred material out of the channel but this will be sanded off at a later date.
A small flame is enough to char the wood and stop excessive burning.
The flame follows the channeled grooves if they are deep enough.
The result of this process is the rough rough form with charred channels and cracks.
The next stage is to sand back the surface, oil and wax the piece and attach a means of hanging.
